Constitution Day of India: An Overview

Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas, is celebrated in India on November 26th every year. This day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949. However, the Constitution officially came into effect on January 26, 1950, which is celebrated as Republic Day.

History and Significance

The drafting of the Constitution was led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the Chairman of the Drafting Committee. Often referred to as the Father of the Indian Constitution, Dr. Ambedkar played a pivotal role in shaping the framework of the nation’s governance.

The Constituent Assembly took almost three years (2 years, 11 months, and 18 days) to draft the Constitution.

The Indian Constitution is the longest written constitution in the world, containing 395 articles (originally) divided into 22 parts and 8 schedules. After various amendments, it now comprises 470 articles, 25 parts, and 12 schedules.
