What is Rational Number?

Questions and Answers about Various types of Numbers. Important for All Classes of students.

Q.1. What is Rational Number?
Ans. A rational number is any number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction p/q of two integers, where p is the numerator and q is the denominator. The denominator cannot be zero. Examples include 3/4, -2, and 5.

Q.2. What is Natural Number?
Ans. Natural numbers are positive integers starting from 1 and continuing indefinitely (1, 2, 3, 4, ...). They are used for counting and ordering, representing the basic, non-negative values used in everyday counting.

Q.3. What is Whole Number?
Ans. Whole numbers include all the natural numbers (1, 2, 3, ...) along with zero (0). They form a set that starts from zero and extends infinitely in the positive direction (0, 1, 2, 3, ...).

Q.4. What is an integer?
Ans. Integers encompass all whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, ...) along with their negative counterparts (..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...). Integers include both positive and negative values, as well as zero.

Q.5. Is zero a rational number?
Ans.Yes, zero is a rational number. A rational number is any number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction of two integers, where the denominator is not zero. Since 0 can be expressed as 0/1, it fits the definition of a rational number.

Q.6. What is the smallest natural number?
Ans. The smallest natural number is 1. Natural numbers start from 1 and continue indefinitely (1, 2, 3, 4, ...).

Q.7. What is the smallest whole number?
Ans. The smallest whole number is 0. Whole numbers include all the natural numbers (1, 2, 3, ...) along with zero (0).

Q.8. What is an irrational number? Give an example.
Ans. An irrational number is a real number that cannot be expressed as a simple fraction or ratio of two integers. Its decimal representation goes on forever without repeating.

An example of an irrational number is the mathematical constant "pi" (π), which represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. The decimal expansion of pi is non-terminating and non-repeating: 3.141592653589793...
